Diamond earrings: the pair, the fastening, the weight

Earrings are seen from the front, from a metre away, and always as a pair. So they are not judged like a ring. The two stones must first of all look alike: same diameter, same tint. Since nobody examines them up close, colour and clarity can drop a few grades without changing the effect at all, provided the cut is good. Our article on the 4Cs of a diamond explains why.

The fastening deserves as much attention. A butterfly back slides onto the post and holds by friction; a screw back takes a few seconds longer and does not come off by itself. On drop earrings or leverbacks, check that the hook closes properly.

Weight, for its part, is felt at the end of a day. If you are undecided, light studs can be worn anywhere, and a matching pendant completes the set.

Frequently asked questions

The screw system: the back screws onto a threaded post and cannot slip. The simple friction back goes on faster but loosens over the years, and a jeweller can then tighten or replace it. For earrings kept on day and night, the screw back is the safest.

Studs. They catch neither in hair nor in a scarf, and go with everything. Drops move and draw the eye more, which makes them earrings for going out.

Look at the colour of the jewellery she wears most, yellow gold or white metal, and stay with that tone. Studs set with a round diamond are the safest choice, because they suit every face. Just check that her ears are pierced.
