Diamond bracelets: wrist size and clasp

Of all jewellery, a bracelet takes the most knocks, against the edge of a desk or a door handle. So choose it for the life it will lead.

A bangle is rigid and keeps its shape; it has to pass over the hand or open on a hinge. A flexible bracelet follows the wrist: a chain with a motif, or a line of diamonds set one after another, known as a rivière. On a rivière, look at how each stone is held. Claws let more light through, a bezel setting protects the edge of the diamonds better, as our article on types of setting shows.

Wrap a soft tape measure or a strip of paper around your wrist, just above the bone, without pulling tight. Add about one centimetre for a close fit, two for a looser one. For a closed bangle, it is the passage of the hand that counts: ask for advice before you order.

The diamond can take it, the mount less so. The links and settings work with every knock, and the chlorine in a swimming pool attacks gold alloys. Take it off for sport, swimming and sleep, and have the clasp checked from time to time.
